TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening last at which the Mayor, E. H. Hardy, Esq., presided. The following councillors were present:—Messrs Mostyn Jones, Lusk, Lever, Graham, Somerville and Walsh. Cr Somerville moved and Cr Graham seconded "That a poll be taken of the ratepayers for the.loan of £IOOO not to exceed 6J per cent, interest and sinking fund at the rate of not more than one-tweltb penny in tha £ o» the capital value extending over a period of fifteen years. The loan to be expended in sewerage connections. The motion was carried. Statutory Half Holiday. A petition of 35 storekeepers favouring Thursday as the half holiday was presented, and it was decided to declare Thursday as the Statutory weekly half holiday. The following report was received from the Works Committee:— Septic Tanks. Mr Metcalfe sub* mitted a detail plan of proposed filter beds whch he had drawn up aithe result of several interviews with the Public Health Department, who had suggested that this work be earried out to properly complete the septic tank, the cost of which Mr Metcalfe estimated at about £2OO, over and above the sum of £l5O deducted from Mr Spencer's contract for the purpose of completing the work. But as this was an expensive item for the Council to meet Mr Metcalfe had obtained verbal permission from the Department to discharge the effluent from the tank direct into the river by means of extra oiping which would cost approximately £2O, and thus depend for purification by dilution in the river. After duly considering the alternative proposals the Committee authorised the expenditure of £2O for extra piping, and instructed the Town Clerk to obtain from the Health Department confirmation of this arrangement. Mr Metcalfe reported that he would be sending men to finish the tank during the next week.—Received and adopted.
