ST. LUKE'S SUMMER CARNIVAL.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The Summer Carnival under the auspices of St Luke's Ladies' Guild, which was held in the public school grounds on Thursday proved an unqualified success. Special preparations had been made by the committer and the various branches of the carnival were thoroughly well managed At the marquees erected in the grounds the various stalls did excellent business, the refreshment stall in particular being much appreciated. The various stalls were presided over as follow:—Plain work: Mesdames Lee, Bond and Wells. Flowers and sweets: Mesdames Lamb and Curtis. Fish pond: Mr 3 Warmingcon and Miss Lee. Refreshments: Mesdames Conway Jones, Crump, and McGee, and Misses Lee, Elwood and Fickling. Produce: Misses Biggs, Handyside, and Heke.

During the afternoon a highly enjoyable programme of sports was got through, the results being as follows: —Swimming race, Mr Gates's pri*e, Parker; tub race, Mr McColl's prize, Parker; slow bicycle, Mr Walker's prize, Rev. Heke; stepping the chain, Mr Fentnn's prize Rev. Heke; tug-of-war, boys, Mr Blackman's team; girls' race, Mrs Macdonald's prize, Miss M. Bailey; pillow fight, G. and C.'s prize, Rev. Heke; hanging out washing, clock, Mr Hillary. The promoters of the carnival were fortunate in being favoured with fine weather, and it is anticipated a profit of about £4O will -be realised by the function.

The thanks of the Guild are due to the School Committee for. the use of the grounds, and to the Town Band for the excellent music it discoursed during the evening; also ta the large number of friends who assisted both in work and in gifts.
