SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES.
ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST. The supplementary estimates, introduce on Wednesday, provide for appropriations of £82,500 out of the Public Works fund, and £142,000 out of the ordinary revenue account. The items of general interest are as follows : Subsidy on steam service, New Zealand to San Francisco, £3250; New Zealand to Vancouver, £BOOO. Experiments in connection with bush sickness, £250; wool instruction classes for inspectors, £llO. The salary of the Director of Physical Training, who will take charge of the new system associated with the primary schools is to be £6OO per annum, and provision is made for two instructors and inspectors. Annuity to the widow of the late Sir William Steward, on account of services rendered by her late husband, £l5O. Expenses in connection with the Trade of Empire Commission, £IOOO. Tiavelling costs grant to cover expenses of Minister of Finance of visit to London, £100u; grant to private secretary accompanying Minister of Finance, £<* so; grant to Sir William Hall-Jones to cover return travelling expenses, £400; grant to Hon. Mackenzie to cover travelling expenses while proceeding to London to assume the office of High Commissioner, £SOO. £250 is set down to meet expenses in connection with th 3 defence of prisoners under the Justices of the Peace Amendment Act, 1912, and £SOO to meet the expenses of the SolicitorGeneral's visit to England in connection with the Webster claims. The Mines Department's votes include £IOOO contribution to goldimners' relief fund. _ _ The printing of Royal Commission reports is an expensive item, as the following items in the Estimates show: —Printing report of Public Service Commission, £SO, overtime (additional) £500; printing report and evidence of Cost of Living Commission, £455; printing report and evidance of Education Commission, £600; Drinting report and evidence of West Coast Settlement Reserves Commission, £IOO. The expenses of the Cost of Living Commission amount to £4OO and those of the Western Taranaki Railway, £2lO. £ISOO appears under the heading of salaries for the staff of the new Mental Hospital in course of erection at Tokanui, and £IOOO is voted for general developmental work and bringing land into cultivation at men- | tal hospitals.
