A FRIENDLY DEBATE.
TAUMARUNUI v. TE KUITI. THE VISITORS ENTERTAINED. The long-promised debate between teams selected from the Taumarunui and Te Kuiti Debating Societies was held on Thursday evening in tne Municipal Hall. The subject chosen for the war of words was "Is the public control for the sale of liquor in the King Country advisable, the Te Kuiti representatives taking the affirmative and the visitors the negative. A little alteration in the teams of both societies wa3 made, surne of those originally chosen being unable to attend. Messrs Howarth, Ellison, Hardy, Martin, Falwasser and Young represented Te Kuiti while the iaumarunui team consisted of Messrs Short, Father Williams, Laird, Canton, Hocking and Somerville. The choice of judges was left to Te Kuiti and Major Lask, Messrs Foy and Matthew were appointed. Mr Howarth led for Te Kuiti and Mr Short for the visitors, and after a highly interesting debate, in which the many phases of the liquor question were introduced the award of the judges was given to the local team by a narrow margin. Major Lusk, in making the award, plained that the decision had nothing to do with the merits of the question under debate; the finding was on the manner in which the subject had been handled generally by the contending debaters individually and collectively. At the conclusion of the debate a hearty vote of thanks was, on the motion of Mr Short seconded by Mr Howarth, tendered to the judges. Mr Short, on behalf of the Taumarunui society, extended an invitaton to the Te Kuiti Society to visit Taumarunui for a return debate, and expressed a hope that the same judges woud be induced to officiate. After the debate the visitor and members of the local society were entertained at a supper by Mr E. H. Hardy, president of the Te Kuiti Society, and a very pleasant evening was spent. A number of toasts were honoured, the visitors all expressing their high appreciation of the hospitality extended to them by Mr Hardy.
