MAROKOPA.
Own Correspondent. The sports meeting to be held on October 25th, promises to be a great success. It is anticipated that the chopping events will attract considerable attention. The rowing event is to be keenly contested, and Mr P. W. Bell is busily engaged in completing four sculling boats new for the occasion. A large attendants uf settlers is expected, and a most enjoyable day is sure to eventuate, provided the elements are favourable. Mr E. C. Stanley has been informed by Mr F, lredale, of Awakino, that he has sold the s.s. Pitoitoi to Messrs Ogle and Co. An agreement waß entered into by settlers of this district with Mr lredale as regards the trade of this port, but it set out that if the sold the controlling interest in the vessel that the agreement would be terminated. Mr lredale, as far as possible, has done his best to carry out the terms agreed to, and on the whole the service has been fairly satisfactory of late. However, now that the boat has been sold settlers are afraid that the service will revert to the old order of things, and a movement is on foot to go in for a boat of their own for trade along the coast and Marokopa. A vessel is at present under offer, and it is understood is well adapted for the coastal trade. A meeting is to be held in connection with the matter at an early date, and it is stated on good authority that there is every likelihood the proposal will be carried into effect.
The weather continues to be very rough, and the roads are in an almost impassable state. The dairy factory ha 3 not commenced operations owing to the roads. However, a start may be made any day soon. WAITARA WHARFAGE CHARGES The Editor. The matter was dealt with under Marokopa news, and the heading was "Back Blocks Freights," I think under date September 18th. I am instructed to r write to you and to say that the wharfage charge at Waitara on a waggon is ss, and to ask you to be so kind as to give this point publicity in your columns. You will remember that 25s 6d as quoted in the pararagph as the wharfage payable.—G. A. THOMPSON, Secretary Waitara Harbour Board.
