FOR THE SABBATH.

"1 was an hungred and ye gave me meat." (J. E. Miller, D.D.S.) It seems from this picture of the judgment that men's eternal destiny will be settled fay their good works. But a careful study of the passage shows that in the judgment all will turn upon one question—how men have treated Jesus Christ. If they have loved Him and lived for Him they will be honoured by Himi gathered at His right hand and admitted to His kingdom of glory. But if they have not honoured Him, nor lived for Him, they will be rejected by Him. In other words, all will depend upon whether men believe or do not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Believing in Christ means more than giving assent to a correct creed —it means also a life of obedience and service. The whole of a Christian life is love—love for Christ and Christ's own. If we love God we shall love our brother also. If we have the love of Christ in our heart it will show itself to all who belong to Christ. If we would be kind to Christ in person, we shall be kind to everyone of His.

PRACTICAL POINTS. Those to whom the earth is not consecrated Will find their Heaven profane. —Martinean. Do not spend too much time in singing "Oh, to; be nothing, nothing"— just get to work and do something to help another. Do you Wish to prepare for the future? Then live well now. India in Fiji is a subject of deepest importance to Australasian Methodism. There are now nearly 50,000 Indians in these island, an increase of over 20,00.0 in ten years. The Rev. H. Kent says: "Live among them, know their cunning, their lying, their gross immorality, their fatalism and disregard for life! They are very low indeed, and sadly they need our gospel." "I cannot divide religious and secular education. Is a man not doing a religious act in keeping accounts? — some would be better Christians if they kept better accounts. Teaching a man to read is that not a religious act? When you begin to divide the religious and the secular you always get into difficulties. The physician and the minister are brothers. Christ healed men's bodies before He touched their souls."—G. H. Archibald. "I gaze in awe at the mystic saint. That dwells in the light which the rainbow's paint; But love the saints that darn and scrub, And the tired old soul at the washing tub." —Ella W. Wilcox. Martyrs were burned at the stake — rather their bodies were so destroyed, but the bodies are not the martyrs. The martyr spirit was released from the body when the functions of the body had ceased. We read in God's word, "When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the same kindle upon them." This was their experience.

HELPS BY THE WAY. Do not fret over what seems a waste of time in trying to do good: just keep on trying. Nothing fails which is done for God. Do not allow trouble to crush you. Rejoice and sing songs, even though they be "songs in the night."

Just follow Jesus—He has been over your pathway and knows all the dangerous places. It is the mission of Chrstianity to do works of mercy. What have you one?

If we live a life of love we refresh all whom we touch. No matter now much good we are doing for othars we must always watch our own souls. N lf you are sighing for a Jofty work, If great ambitions dominate your mind, Just watch vourself, and see you do not shirk The common little ways of being kind. "I had conceived a great prejudice against missions in the South Seas, and I had no sooner come there than that prejudice was at first reduced, and then annihilated."—R. L. Stevenson.

Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, niether let the mighty man glory .in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord. —Word of God. No weak man can be a successful politician—in fact he will never be a great success at anything. It takes a strong man to be a successful Christian and the Christianity of the 20th century demands the strongest of men for it is now engaged in a fight against all the ills that war on mankind, and greater and fiercer conflicts with the powers of darkness are yet to be fought. It is time for all true followers of Christ to "put on the whole armour of God." We heartily recommend to the readers of this column Harold Begbies "Broken Earthenware." GOD SOMETIMES SHUTS THE DOOR. God sometimes shuts the door and shuts us in, That He may speak, perchance thro' grief or pain, And Boftly, heart to heart above the din, May tell some precious thought to us again. God sometimes shuts the door and keeps us still, That our so feverish haste, our deep unrest, Beneath His gentle touch may quiet, till He whispers what our weary hearts love best. God sometimes shutß the door and tho' shut in, If 'tis His Handj shall *ve not wait and see? If worry lies without and toil and sin. God's word may wait within for you and me.'
