NATIVE LEASES.
DEPUTATION TO Til 13 PREMIER

A deputation, consisting of Messrß W. G. Mitchell and R. H. Dodd, representing holders of Maori leases in the Morikau No. 2 and Whararangi blocks, was introduced to the J'rimo Minister by Mr E. Newman, M.P. for Rangitikei to-day. Its object wag to urge that facilities be given to acquire the freehold.
The speakers suggested that their position was stronger than that of the Ouhtu settlers, who had put, forward a similar request to the Prime Minister, seeing that; a reserve for the permanent benefit of the natives existed in the Morikau No. 2 block. The Prime Minister replied that he had every sympathy with the deputation, and would make special inquiries from the Native Department regarding the position. The House would have to deal with the mutter if anything was done, and ho was personally willing to help. Ho thought if very unfair that th" settlers should have to make roads at their own expense for the ultimate benefit, of the Maoris
