PRIVATE TELEPHONE LINES.
GOVERNMENT CHARGES. A WAITOMO GRIEVANCE. A certain amount of dissatisfaction has been caused among subscribers to private telephone lines in the Waitomo district by being called upon to pay the usual bureau charges for telephone messages. The district has been well linked up by telephone, the lines having been erected by the settlers by whom the whole expense has been borne. The Government line between Hangatiki and the Caves is the only line put in by the department and all the necessary expense towards getting connected with the Government line has been undertaken by the settlers. Those who use the Government line have to pay the usual bureau charges, and in addition a charge of £1 10s per year is levied on the subscribers. These conditions are considered somewhat harsh by those interested and when at Wellington last week Mr Vickerman had an interview with the Postmaster-General with a view to seeking some amelioration. The Minister promised to go carefully into the matter, and do what he could to meet the settlers.
