Paris, Thursday
The investigation of a French army scandal had led to the release of a soldier who has been unjustly im-
prisoned. In 1909 Emile Rousset, a soldier, saw a lieutenant and two sergeants illtreating a soldier who was serving a punitive term with an Algerian regiment. The soldier was'oxhausted with the heat, ancTtho lieutenant and two sergeants crammed salt in his mouth and left him to die in the^desert. Rousset reported the incident, and was thereupon thrown into prison for two years' General Rauier was sent to Morocco to inquire and ordered the release of Rousset and the arrest of the lieutenant and sergeants.
Two days before the trial of tho lieutenant and sergeants Rousset waß rearrested on a charge of murdering a comrade, and was sentenced to 20 year's imprisnoment. The lieutenant and sergeants were then released. The witnesses who gave evidence against Rousset now admit that they committed perjury, and the prosecutor says that he was deceived.
