OTOROHANGA.
MORE STREET FORMATION. Own Correspondent. A special meeting of the Otorohanga Town Board was held on Thursday to discuss with the engineer (Mr Sims) the expenditure of tho balance of the loan money. The engineer submitted a report showing that tho contractor had not adhered definitely to the levels for the water tables, which accounted mainly for tho water lying along Maniapoto street afler the last heavy rain; also he had planned to have a grade of about 1 in 450 as Maniapoto street was so level, and that would be sufficient if tho water tables were of concrete. Ho also submitted diagrams and specifications of culvert crossings for uniform entrances to privately-owned sections Tho contractors is to be requested to alter the footpaths in Tuhora street to the correct levels, and tho verandah potsa re to be moved from the centre to the outer edge, of th« footpaths.— I was decided to have eight crossings laid down at tho junction of Tuhora and Maniapoto strew,s. New Works.—The engineer stated that he had taken the levels of all the streets, and suggested that certain works should be done in the named streets as far as the money allocated to each street would suffice—lt was decided that, as there were so many streets with small amounts, it would be advisable to do the work by day labour, and the council are to hire a grader and engage a foreman. Kanawa Street.—Tho amount allocated for this stret is .£230 and it is proposed to expend this in reforming the existing roadway as far as the school, and metalling to a width of 25 feet, and also to form footpaths 12 feet wide, and to gravclj tho footpaths on the west side. Mair Street. —The amount allocated for thi3 street is £79, and as tho street is very narrow at present a discussion arose as to whether a narrow footpath should be provided. -It was decided to leave out tho footpath, and to form to the levels and gravel to the full width in the narrow parts. Karehuka Street.—Out of the £l7O for this street a footpath 10 feet wide is provided for, to be gravelled sixfeet W'de on the west side from Tuhora street to To Kawa street, and a idth of 30 fejt is o be formed in the road as far as Kahira street.
Turonga Street. - This road is a chain and a half wide, and there aro two rather expensive undertakings to make it £a first class read.—As tho sum allocated is only £125 it was decided to form the toad from Kanawa street to tho intersection of Ballance street only. This provides for the piping and filling in of the gully across the road close to the Maori meeting house. If any funds aro available a footpath is to be formed on one side.
The engineer has not prepared the final specifications for the remainder of the streets, but expects to have them ready very shortly. Ho had only prepared sufficient to keep tho work going. A considerable discussion arose as to whether it was advisable to commence work at once, or to wait until summer had definitely set in. Eventually it was decided on the motion suggestion of the chairman, to proceed at once to form the footpath on the west side of Kanawa street, and to form and metal Mair street, which is the worst portion of the whole township and will be badlycut Up if nothing is done to it before the creamery carts commence to travel over it daily. Section Owners' Liability. —Gorse and other noxious weeds havo at present undisputed possession of some of the side roads and owners of such sections are to be requested to immediately remove such noxious weeds to one-half the width of the roadway in front of their sections. Owners of sections would do well to have noxious weeds removed at once before they receive notice. Private Street Crossings. -- The works committee arc to meet and go into the matter of private crossings required over wafer channels., and to order the material for same. The council to put thorn in at the expense of the section holdors. Verandahs on Fooptaths. - Owners of buildings with the verandah posts not on the outer side of footpaths arc to be given notice to remove same to the proper width, 9ft Gin or 10ft, so that the contactor may proceed with his work. The chairman stated that the directors had worked tho matter out very carefully, and had gone into tho various pros and cons of the situation before they had arrived at the decision.
