METALLING CONTRACTS.
DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL. At Monday night's meeting of the Waitomo County Council reference was made to the manner in which metalling contracts were let by the council. The chairman said the matter of clearing slips off the road when metal had been laid was a question which should be dealt with. In certain cases difficulties had arisen. At the same time it was plain contractors could be employed clearing slips all the winter. Cr O'Dwyer said he thought all the contracts should be let for the delivery of metal only, and the council should do its own spreading. Other councillors agreed with Cr 0 'Dwver. The "chairman said the council had employed spreaders on the metalling contracts, but had found difficulty in keeping the men, owing to various reasons. It seemed the only wav to meet the position was for the council to do all its own spreading. As far as the matter of slips was concerned the council would have to tak- steps to protect itself in all cases.
