WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held at Te Kuifci on Monday evening. There '.vera present —Crs Scholes(cnuirman), Hoffman, O'Dwyer, Smyth, Berry, Were and Johnston.

Te'Ahurua Road. The chairman reported that he and Cr Berry had examined the Te Ahuroa road and recommended that no action be taken regarding the gates. T. D. Baily wrote asking that Waitonio Valley road should be continued in order to give acce?s to his section. About two and a half miles would he necessary to connect. ■ —■ Cr Gregg said the ru?.d would require to be put through, 'cut there was no money as vet. Government grant was expected for the road. —Resolved thau the application for a grant be strongly recommended.

Mr Burrow wrote making application to lease a small reserve at the approach to bridge on MiroahuiaoMaongaotaki road. —Left to the councillor for the riding.

Quarry Reserve.—The acting engineer for tne railway district wrote respecting the reserve. The chairman said Mr Lowe was expected to visit the district this week when the matter would be discussed. Arapae Road Contract. Mr V\ illiams, resident engineer, wrote making certain suggestions with respect t 0 & the taking over of the road by the council.- Resolved that Mr Williams' report be adopted and the work be taken over in terms of Mr Wililams' letter. Hospital Board Levy. The clerk announced that the levy for the year for hospital and charitable aid purposes was £402 la 2d. Shortening a Roacl. A petition from a large number of Mangaotaki and Pio Pio settlers was received asking that a stock track be taken through from the Mangaotaki road to the Awakino road past Mr Wills' boundary and alongside the school ground. It was pointed out that the track would be a great benefit to settlers in driving stock to the saleyards and also to school children from the Mangaotaki district.—Cr O'Dwyer supported the petition and said he thought the council should assist in the matter. —It was resolved on the motion of Crs O'Dwyer and Smyth that the council should acquire the track under the Public Works Act provided the settlers interested to pay half the expenses and liabilities, if any. , Heavy Traffic.—A letter was read from R. Were drawing attention to the manner in which Ihe road were cut up by heavy waggons and requesting that the provisions of the Public Works Act relating to heavy traffic should be enforced. —The clerk sa;d the provisions of the Act had been advertised. Tawarau Road.—The Under-Secre-tary of the Public Works Department wrote with respect to the delay in passing the contact. —Received. Kakamutu Road. —The clerk of the Otorohanga Town Council wrote to the effect that it was proposed to metal tf ; e road in question which constituted the boundary between the township and county. It was suggested that both bodies should act together in the matter --On the motiun of Crs Gregg and Hoffman it was decided that the councU take no action at present, it being understood that the settlers were taking action to metal. Te Raumauku School. —■ The contractor for the erection of the school wrote requesting that some bad places should be repaired on the road in order to allow the timber for the school to be brought out.- Cr Gregg said he had authorised the work to be dene. The plr-ces badly needed fascining as settlers required the U3e of the road as well as the contractor. Kawa Swamp Road. —C. Gooseman wrote to the effect that a number of men and teams bad been engaged repairing the road for one day and left it to the council to pay for the work done. The clerk said the amount of £3 7s 9d had been paid for the work.

Metalling Contracts. Cr Berry reported on the contracts of Mr Rotherv and Mr Cameron at Honikiwi. —It was decided that the council take over the portion of the metalling finished bv Mr Rothsry and that he be paid 75 per cent, of the money owing for that portion finished subject to him maintaining the road for one month, fill in any ruts, rake any loose stones and break them in the centre, the hole to be to the satisfaction of the council's representatives. Te Kuiti-Awakino Road. The clerk was instructed to call for tenders for metalling the Te KuitiAwakino road between the 17 and 18 mile pegs. The Stone Crusher.—The motion of which the chairman had given notice with the view of rescinding the cancellation of the order for a stone crusher from Messrs Anderson, Ltd., was seconded by Cr Berry, and on being put to the meeting was lost. Reserve?. —A letter was read from ! the department stating that steps were now being taken for the leasing of reserves by tender, and the same would shortly be advertised. W. F. Weaver, Wa ; miha, wro f e with resnect to leasing a reserve between Waimiha and Poro-o-tarao. — The clerk was intrcuted to reply stating the matter could not be dealt with by the council. Billiard Rcorn License.-A letter was received regarding a billiard room license at Waimiha, stating that the Maori Council demanded a license f ce _—The clerk said he had replied requesting that the license be paid to the County Council, and that the council would deal with the Maori Council in the matter. Kawa Bridge. —• Messrs Earl and Kent wrote requesting information on behalf of clients, of the position of the proposed bridge.—The clerk said he had replied to the effect that the vote for the bridge had been made as £ for £ subsidy which was an error. The Minister had promised that a straightout vote would be made for the work would be made when Pariament met.

Pukearuhe Road. —A letter was received fom C. W. Hornibiow, regarding the passing of the contract. —The clerk said the formation was not satisfactory to the department, consequently the county could not take over the work. Caves Road Contract. —The contractor wrote asking for a progress payment of £l5O. —The application was held over. Shifting Stone Crusher. —The matter of investigating the charge for the removal of the stone c.rusher to Aria was left to Cr O'Dwyer to report.
