THE EDUCATION COMMISSION
[BY TELEGRAPH.—rRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, This Day.
Mr C. J. Parr, Mayor of Auckland, in giving evidence before the Education Commission, said the present system of administering primary education by boards and committees was as satisfactory as could be devised. He agreed, however, that some of the smaller boards could be amalgamated. The chairman of a large board should be paid a salary and should travel about the district, as many difficulties could be settled very quickly by a personal interview between the chairman and committee. In regard to city schools a great evil was the lack of adequate playgrounds. In reply to questions, Mr Parr said he did not approve of local rates; the cost of education should come out of tinConsolidated Fund. The commission left for the south by the express last night.
