A REFORM PARTY BANQUET.
MR MASSEY AT TAIHAPE.
[flY TKLEGRAPH. —I>RESS ASSOCIATION.] Taihape, This Day.
Speaking last night at a complimentary social to Mr Hockley, the unsuccessul Opposition candidate for Waimarino, Mr Massey remarked on the Government's delay to fill the position of High Commissioner, and the to appoint a successor to Sir Joseph Ward on the Imperial Trade Commission. He criticised the raising of the recent loan which, he said, would probably cost altogether 5 per v cent. and these loans should have been raised months ago, when the market was easier. It was the worst piece of financing in the last twenty years. In order to fully settle the land the right of purchase should be given to holders of leases in perpetuity. The Legislative Council should be elective. The Reform party would not go back on a single pledge given at the general elections. He thought when Parliament met there would be a split in the Government ranks and a number of prominent members of that party would be secured to co-operate in forming a Government, which would be in the best interests of the country.
