NATIVE LANDS.
Speaking at Rotorua no Monday night, the Minister of Lands and Native Affairs said: "Maoris as owners of land, must bear the same burdens as Europeans in regard to local taxation, and the difficulty in collcting rates would be remedied by the projected legislation. It was the intention of the Government to bring down legislation providing that unoccupied native land in small areas should come under the scope of the Native Lands for Settlement Act, and be made available for European settlement. Where individual titles were not ascertained, the public trustee should hold the money until they were. The land would be thrown open on the optional system.
