The first representative Northern Union football match of the season was played on the Frankton ground last Saturday afternoon, when the Hamilton representatives met Te Kuiti and were defeated by five to three. Rain fell at the start of the game and made good rushes almost an impossibility. The game was closely contested throughout, but Te Kuiti had a little the best of the play in the fir3t spell. In the second half the play was mostly in favour of Hamilton. St. George kicked off for Hamilton, and immediately a free kick for Te Kuiti placed the home team on the defence. The visitors continued to press until a force relieved Hamilton. From the kick out Te Kuiti returned to the attack, and from the loose Hetet dashed through and scored. Bonner failed at goal. Te Kuiti 3, Hamilton nil. Hamilton then took up the attack and were awarded a kick within goal range, but Blincoe faiL'd. Immediately after play went to the other end and the visitors were awarded a kick for offside play and Bonner with a good effort added two more points. Play then became more even for a period but after a time Hamilton gained a decided advantage, which was spoilt by Cowley holding the ball. The home team were not to be denied, and from a loose rush, in which Haywood and Cowley were prominent, Blincoe scored. St. George failed at goal— Hamilton 3, Te Kuiti 5. Half-time was called shortly after this. In the second spell Hamilton fought hard to secure a win and forced the play for some time. Morse, Blincoe and Hogg put in a neat bit of passing work and then Hogg centred and a dangerous position was saved by Poutawera who marked and cleared. Another dangerous rush by Hamilton forwards was picked up by Hetet who got his side out of difficulty with a good kick. Shortly after Blincoe and Hogg were responsible for play that landed near Te Kuiti's line, but in the scramble that followed the ball was forced by Brown, full back. For a period Te Kuiti then took up the attack and Bonner made a good opening but the chance was lost by the ball going forward in the pass. Hamilton returned the invasion with interest and twice Hughes and Hogg placed Te Kuiti in dangerous positions which were only saved by the excellent defensive work of Te Kuiti backs. After this Hamilton seemed to tire and play was centred for 3ome time. Before the game ended Hogg made a good opening by smothering the opposing fullback. His effort was taken advantage of by St. George who snapped up the ball and made for the line but spoilt his work by attempting to pass to Hogg when he should have gone on himself. The final effort of the game was made by Te Kuiti, Hetet, Molloy and Bonner putting in some fine passing work, which was stopped by Hamilton's full back. Whistle for time ended a good game. Mr Sprague, of Ngaruawahia ably controlled the game. For the Te Kuiti team J. Hetet, Bonner, Molloy, F. Ellis and H. Poutawera were most prominent, while Harwood, Cowley. Blincoe, Johnston, Hughes and Hogg j played well for Hamilton.
