A STABBING FATALITY.
DYING DEPOSITIONS TAKEN. [HY TKT.KUIi.UMi. I'RKSS ASSI li 'LATIOX. ] Opotiki, Thursday. This afternoon the district coroner took the depositions of a half-caste, Haimona Wirepa, who was brought in from Te Kaha in a dying condition. The statement made is to the effect that a man threatened to strike Wirepa's sister, that he knocked the man down, and that while they were wrestling on the ground Wirepa was stabbed and shockingly mutilated. Wirepa's brother, who was also interviewed, was also severely injured about the arm. It is stated that the assailant fled to the bush.
Later. The injured man died at Opotiki this morning.
At the inquest evidence was given that deceased's injury was indicted by a Maori named Tamehana.
A telegram was received from the Inspector of Police requesting a post mortem examination, and the inquest was adjourned till ten o'clock on Monday morning.
