TE KUITI DEBATING SOCIETY.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

The meeting called for last Saturday night of those interested in the formation of a. debating society and parliamentary union at Te Kuiti, was held in the County Chambers. There was a good attendance and Mr E. 11. Hardy (Mayor) was voted to the chair.

It was decided unanimously that a society be formed to be called the Te Kuiti Debating Society. ■ The following officers were elected: —President, Mr E. H. Hardy; vicepresidents, Major Lusk, Messrs Boddie, Matthew, Hine, Finlay and Howarth; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. Martin; committee, Messrs Howarth, Matthew, Steel, Lusk and Mora.

It was decided that weekly meetings should be held on Thursday evening each alternate Thursday, to be devoted to parliamentary business while fortnightly debates on open subjects will be arranged. The committee was entrusted with the work of drawing up a syllabus for the season.

It was decided to have tho opening night on Thursday, May 16th, when the formal opening of Parliament will take place. The Governor's Speech will be read and the debate on the Address-in-Reply will occupy the members on opening night. It was decided to request Mr Sharpies to accept the leadership of the first government and form a Cabinet. Mr E. Martin consented to lead the Opposition. Major Liisk was unanimously appointed Speaker, and Mr P. Mora Clerk to the House.

The subscription to the society was fixed at 2s 6d, and names to the number of over forty were placed on the members' list.

The meeting place was not definitely fixed, but it was decided to hold the opening of Parliament in the Municipal Hall. Business to commence at 7.30 p.m.
