A meeting of Te Kuiti Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. There were present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs Lusk, Julian, Tammadge, Hardy, Finlay, Young, Sims and Forsyth. Travers also wrote with respect to the road on this property asking if the Council would be prepared to take over the roads as soon as the work on the top road had been done to the Council's satisfaction. Mr Travers said he was prepared to indemnify the Council and carry out the work on the lower road at a later date. The engineer said the metal was not up to requTements a further depth of about two inches being required. He had notified Mr Jordan accordingly, and he understood the contractor had been called upon to complete according to specifications. Cr Forsyth moved that the Council sign the deed of dedication subject to Mr Travers indemnifying the Council in respect to both roada. The motion was seconded by Cr Finlay and carried. Crs Lusk and Julian were appointed to sign deed on behalf of the Council. Mrs E. Page, Auckland, wrote offering a stock of books for the library at a price.—Received. Mr J. Nicholls requested permission to erect two posts in front of his shop. —The clerk was instructed to inform Mr Nicholls that the Council contemplate making other arrangements for stand 3 for horses and in the meantime no further permission is to be granted on the east side of Rora-st. H. G. Vause applied for permission to form an access to his section.— Granted subject to approval of the Works Committee. Proposed Hospital Funds. —Attention was called by the dark to the fact that a sum of money was lodged in the bank by the Council and it was necessary to appoint trustees to deal with the fund. The Mayor said there was a list of contributors and probably a further amount had been collected. It would be wise to conserve this fund as it carried a considerable subsidy. On the motion of Crs Tammadge and Julian, Crs Young and Forsyth were appointed trustees, and the clerk was instructed to ascertain who were the contributors and collect amounts. Horse Trough.—Cr Hardy requested permission to erect a horse trough in any position decided upon by the Works Committee.—Granted. Mr Boddie's Sub-division. —It was decided that the plan should be passed if prepared according to Cr Julian's suggestion to the surveyor, with respect to the road. Crs Lusk and Julian were appointed to sign on behalf of the Council.
Electric Light.—Cr Forsyth said he would like to see some progress made in the direction of providing the town with light. The electric light proposals had been carried and he proposed that Mr S. J. Crooks be written to as to the cost of a report on the scheme, and an estimate of his charges to carry out the work. The motion was seconded by Cr Sims and carried.
Mangaorino Loan. Mr P. Mora, clerk of the County Council, waited on the Council with a view to making an adjustment of the Mangaorino loan, TheC ountyC ouncil's proposals to the effect that the Borough should pay the share agreed upon to the County were accepted. Stone Crusher. —lt was decided to call tenders for the erection of the binns for stone crusher; the engineer to be instructed to put the bridge in a fit state to carry the crusher. Cr Forsyth's motion rescinding the rsolution limiting the Council to contract work only, was seconded by the Mayor and carried. Cr Forsyth said there was no intention on his part of departing from the contract system as a principle, but to give the Council a freer hand. In the past works had been carried out by day labour without plaii3, and they had not known what the separate works had cost. This had led to the passing of the resolution limiting the operations of the Council to contract work. It was desirable to give the Council power to do work by day labour under certain circumstances.
Water Pipes.—Cr Forsyth drew attention to the fact that there was a report by a special committee before the Council dealing with the pipe question which had not been dealt with. He would propose that a report on the manner in which the pipe contract had been fulfilled be obtained from Mr Metcalf. The Mayor said he had gone into the matter very fully with the solicitor and tnere was very little chance of doing any good. He was averse to incurring any expense for a report unless the Council was going to get some benefit. Cr Young, who seconded the motion, said he agreed with the Mayor, but would like to have a report if it did not cost too much. Other Councillors concurred in this opinion, and it was decided that Mr Metcalf be requested to inform the Council what he would charge for a report on the matter. Cr Forsyth withdrew his motion. Reticulation.- -Tenders for the work were received as follows: —-T. T. Wells 32s per chain, H. Rothery 24s per chain. Both tenders were in excess of the estimate and it was decided to hold the matter over pending the appointment of a foreman.
