OTOROHANGA.
Own Correspondent. A very successful progressive euchre party was held in Otorohanga on November 28th, the proceeds of which were for the Roman Catholic building fund. This was to have been held the previous week, but was postponed owing to the sad accident to Mr Burke, a parishioner. There was a very fair attendance, rather more gentlemen than ladies, which necessitated two or three gentlemen playing as ladies. Father"Brennan acted as timekeeper and the whole thing went without a hitch. Mrs O'Brien Won the ladies' prize, a very pretty clock, while Messrs Miller, R. Gregg and another tied for the first gentleman's prize. They decided to cut and each cut an ace, and on cutting again Mr Miller won the very handsome hand-sewn riding bridle presented by Mr Neary. Mr Gardiner won the lady's consolation prize and Mr Comer Board the gentlemen's prize for being at the wrong end. Father Brennan presented the prizes and then a dainty supper was handed round, after whi'/h dancing was indulged in, Mrs J. Gardiner supplying the music. The fund will benefit to the extent of about £4, A novel feature of the evening was the presence of a lad uf 17 years old, with a distinct American accent, who 13 walking around the world for a wager. The lad a«ked permission to sing a couple of songs (and perhaps another if he were asked). He sang his songs and then gave a recital of his life, saying he was left an orphan in Tunis and started from there on his tour. He had to walk on land and work his passage on the steamers. He is now on his way to Wellington After giving his history he went round the room with his cap and collected 2Ss 6d.
