TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
_ .©. The usual meeting of Te Kuiti Borouhg Council was held at the Council Chambers on Monday evening last. There were present—The Mayor (Mr James Boddie). and Crs Forsyth, Sims, Young, Finlay, Hardy, Soiner-
ville, Tammadge, Julian and Lusk. Main Road to Kawhia.--Mr H. il. Babbaga, lion, secretary of the Awaroa branch of the Farmers' Union, wrote to the Mayor with respect to co-operating for the purpose of pushing through the main roads between Te Kuiti and Kawhia and drawing attention to the great benefits to be derived from the establishment of a mail service connection, Kawhia harbour with the railway, and giving access to the chief stock markets of the district. —On the motion of Cr Hardy, seconded by Cr Somerville, the letter was received and it was understood it would be referred to Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce.
Fire Brigade. —A letter was read from Mr J. Erikson, secretary of the local Fire Brigade, informing the council of the resignation of the members of the brigade. —On the motion of Crs Somerville and Forsyth the resignation was accepted. The Mayor said he thoroughly approved of the motion though he regretted the action of brigade members. The council had done all in its power to encourage the Brigade and whatever grievance the members thought they had there was no legitimate cause for their action. He thought a recommendation might be made to the Fire Prevention Committee that early steps be taken .to form a new brigade. On the motion of Cr Forsyth, seconded by Cr Tammadge, the matter was left to the Fire Prevention Committee with power to act. Waiteti Road.—The clerk of the Waitomo County Council wrote drawing attention to the damage caused to the road in consequence of the carting of pipes for the borough water supply.—On the motion of Crs Finlay and Julian it was decided to offer the County Council the sum of £3O in full satisfaction, the understanding being that this was the county engineer's estimate of the amount necessary to repair the damage. Sun Blinds on Footpaths. Mr Fielding applied for permission to erect sun blinds to protect his goods from the sun during summer. He pointed out that other business people were using blinds. — On the motion of Cr Finlay and Young it was resolved that shopkeepers be written to and permission given for the use of front blinds not less than six feet above the road, but that no side blinds be allowed. Permanent Streets. —Messrs Lorigan and Co. wrote requesting to know whether the council wouid have the necessary plans prepared to enable the Telegraph Department to sea where footpaths would extend ta. Until the telegraph posts were removed it would be impossible to proceed with the erection of "a verandah to their building in Rora street. The postmaster also wrote requesting information for the purpose'of knowing whrre telegraph posts should be removed to. ■ -
On the motion of the Mayor and Cr Somerville, it was resolved to reply stating that the council regretted tnat permanent footpaths could not be mad a until water and drainage con nections had been effected, and that this would probably mean a matter of six months.
King Country Gas Co. —Permission was requested by the company to lay gas pipes in Sheridan street, the company undertaking to lift the pipes if required to do so should the council decide to inaugurate a lighting scheme for the borough. Considerable discussion ensued on the matter and it was resolved on the motion of Crs So uerville and Finlay that the application be not granted. George Street Contract. Messrs Lewer and Mitchell applied for one month's extension of time in which to complete the contract, pointing out that they had been considerably delayed by unsettled weather. Crs Young and Forsyth said they had seen the work and the conditions were as represented. —It was"resolved to grant the application subject to the engineer's approval. Water Connections. —Several applications for water connection werp referred to the Water and Drainage Committer.
Fire Station Tower. —Mr Jones, architect, waited on the council and recommended that the tower for the Fire Brigade station be deleted from the specifications for the building.—
It was resolved to adopt the architect's recommendation, the council to procure the tower.
Works Committtee. —The committee recommended that Crs Young and Forsyth go and inspect stone crushing plant with E. Porter and Go's, representative when in Auckalnd; that Cr Young and the turncock attend to the matter of tools for the turncock; that tenders be called for exterminating noxious weeds on the Esplanade; that the matter of a bridge for the waterworks be referred back to the engineer for further information; that tenders bs calied for Seddon street work. Finance and Legal Committee. —The committee reported that the matter of access to the river at the bottom of Waiteti road and Awakino road be deferred pending operations on a larger scale; that Mr R. C. Jordan's letter with respect to lien on Te Kuiti 2 B A be referred to the borough solicitor to deal with; that permanent levels be made in the following streets: —Rom, Taupiri, Sheridan, Alexandra, Carroll, George and Ward streets; King street from the river to the bottom of Hill street, Seddon street from Carroll street to Anne street, Queen street from Carroll street to Princess street; Duke. street; Mgat2i street from Duke street to Edward street; Jennings street; Mangaorino road from Jennings street to Tammadge street;
Tawa street from Jennings street via Matai street to James street; Esplanade from King street bridge to southern end of William street.
Council Office Site. Willi respect, to the acquisition of the site for I borough ofiices the Mayor said thai : he and Cr Finlay had seen Mr I'o.vI !er, president, of the Maori Land ; Board at Auckland, and had i informed that if the council ar.ieed with the native owners with respect ,to a price the board would reeom- ! mend the same, but he could not see ! his way to accept the council's offer. i The Finance and Legal Committ.ee ! recommended that the matter ho ! brought before the Assessment Court ! and dealt with. J The Dust Nuisance. —Or Sim? drew ; attention to the necessity of coping with the dust, nuisance in the town. The council now had the necessary appliances tor watering the streets and provision should be made for taking action in the matter. —On the motion of Cr Sims seconded by Cr Finlay, the matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Tenders. The following tenders were received for the Seddon street contract —M. J. Keane ■££!>, 11. Carr £BO (accepted). Progress Payments.—On the motion of the Mayor and Cr Sims provision was made for payment being made to contractors by the clerk on the engineer's certificate. It was left to the Works Committee with power to act, to deal with work on the road by the bridge near Dr Pax ton's residence. The Mayor and Cr Finlay asked leave to have the notices of motion standing in their names held over till next meeting.—Agreed to.
It was resolved on the motion of Cr Finlay and Sims that the date of the special meeting for the purpose of dealing with the lighting report be fixed at next meeting of the council. A number of accounts were passed for payment.
