RUGBY FOOTBALL.
COMPLIMENTARY DINNER. The Goldfields team were entertained at dinner by the local Union on Saturday night, in the Hotel Grande. The toast of the "King" having been duly honoured, Mr N. C. Matthew proposed the health of the "Goldfields Team." In doing so he welcomed them on their first visit to Te Kuiti, and hoped that there would be many other visits in the future.
Mr Morgan, the visitors' Captain, in reply thanked the Maniapoto Union fur the excellent arrangements made. The game had been a friendly one, and was good, hard football. Mr Morgan paid a tribute to the referee, Mr N. B. Lusk. Mr N. B. Lusk, in proposing the health of the "South Auckland Union" referred to when that Union was started, and mentioned that in those days Maniapoto did not like the idea of cutting away from the parent body. He now believed that separation was in the interests of football. The- South Auckland body had no feeling against the parent Union. A little tact would remove any little feeling that might exist amongst the few. Mr Field, Preisdent of tho South Auckland Union, said that undoubtedly the Maniapoto Union had some good football talent. It was by the interchanges of matches such as they had that day that country teams would improve their football. That was the idea when the South Auckland Union was launched.
Mr Morgan, Captain of the Goldfields team, proposed the health of the local team, to which Mr H. Rothery. Captain of the Maniapoto team replied. Mr N. C. Matthew propose the health of "Our Native Friends," to which Mr Andrew Eketone and Mr Tapsall responded. Other toasts honoured were, "The Referee," "The Ladies," and "The Press." During the evening, songs were given by Messrs N. B. Lusk, Mitchell, and Howard. Mr Young also contributed a recitation.
The local officials thoroughly appreciated the sportsmanlike manner in which the visitors behaved throughout their visit to Te Kuiti and the general opinion was that a better behaved and more sportsmanlike visiting team had never come to Te Kuiti. As one often hears reports that footballers on tour are a "noisy crowd," it is gratifying to hear such reports of our Goldfield friends.
