GOVERNOR'S PARTY WIPED OUT UNCONFIRMED REPORT. liy Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright Received February 22, 9.55 a.m. Melbourne, This Day. The Minister for External Affairs has received the following telegram from Papua "A report from Dam yesterday states that Merri Eglandan, San Juan, is informed that the whole of the Governor's party has been wiped out, with the exception of two carriers, who returned to Goaribari. This requires confirmaiton, but the informant, who is a most reliable official, adds he fears it is true." Mr A. Lee Hunt has received a letter from Judge Herbert, expressing the opinion that the march contemplated by Smith would preclude him reaching the coast earlier than February 21st. The letter was written after he had learned Smith intended to essay the overland journey to the upper reaches of the Fly river.
