GARDEN PARTY AND FETE
The pretty, shaded grounds of Te Kuiti public school were en fete on Wednesday afternoon and evening, when the members of the Anglican Church in the district gave their annual garden party and sale of work. For some weeks past the ladies of the congregation have been busy making preparations for the event, and the result oc their efforts was seen in the effective displays on the various stalls. At 3 p.m. his Worship the : Mayor (Mr James Boddie) formally opened the sale of work, in a happy speech, and during the afternoon and evening the stall-holders were kept busy serving their patrons. The refreshment tent was a large marquee, I and the prettily arranged tables were j presided over by quite a bevy of fair i ladies, who, as the evening wore on, j were kept busily employed serving | out tea and cakes, i At 8 p.m. an open-air concert j was given, on the verandah of Mr | Power's residence in the grounds, i with the following interesting pro- | gramme, each item duly announced by | Mr Mostyn Jones: —Pianoforte solo, j "Cachoucha" (Raff), Miss Ivy Grajham; song "Lovs's old sweet song," i followed by "Golden Love," Mis 1 Rouse; duet (violin and flute), "La I Serenata" (Braga), Mrs Arthur C. Acompaniments were played j by Mrs Lissaman, Miss Graham and | Miss Hampton, and gramaphone selections were given by Mr Mostyn Jones. The following were the stallholders: Work Stall: Mesdames Hitchcock, | Goldthorpe, Rouse and Porter, j Sweets and Flowers: Mesdames, i Bond, White, Johnson and Adams, j Afternoon Tea: Mesdames Power and I Lissaman and Misses Martin, Graham j (2), Jordan, Wildman and Williams, j Produce Stall: Mesdames Melling, i Stanton and Capp. Bran Tub: Misses i Ellison and King. j Effective service was rendered by i the Rev. Wayne and Messrs Gold- | thorpe and Jull, the latter especially ! proving a tower of strength to the i ladies in the work of the afternoon. | The takings for the day amounted to ; about £SO. It is intended to make i the open-air gathering an annual one, ' and it must be admitted that of Wed- : nesday was very enjoyable and suc- | cessful. There were a very large ! number present at the evening enteri tainment, which proves that music and ! the open-air (combined, perhaps, with | light refreshments), go exceedingly ! well together.
