BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY
On Thursday morning his Worship the Mayor (Mr James JBoudie), accompanied by Crs Lusk and Hetet, the Town Clerk and Mr Spencer, consulting engineer to the borough, paid a visit to the site of what may prove to be the most suitable place from which to draw the water supplies for the borough—the head of the Waiteti stream, at a point where three tributaries join and flow through a natural ravine. The ravine, with the aid of a small dam, would form an excellent natural reservoir, which, is estimated by the engineer, would conserve from five to seven million gallons of water. It is situated at an altitude of 330 feet above the town, and this height would give a pressure of 150 to 160 pounds to the square inch. Judging by the present flow it is estimated that, allowing for the water-shed reserves, there would be a sufficient water supply for the needs of 6000 people. There are also several other excellent streams that could be tapped in the future, if a larger supply was needed, and these could be con nected either through the reservoir or the mains. Altogether, the visitors expressed themselves as very favourably impressed with the suitability and the localiaty of the scheme. The distance the water is carried by this alternative is little over half of that for the. Mangakewa or Mokau schemes —• about six miles at the outside. A sample of the water has been taken, and to the naked eye, appears excellent. It has been sent to the Government analyst for his report. The party was hospitably entertained by Mrs Gillanders, and the opportunity was taken to discuss arrangements likely to be made between the council and property owners, from whose lands water would come. It was found they would be prepared to consider in a reasonable manner the council's needs.
