OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL

Engineer's Report. The following is the engineer's report, submitted at the last meeting of the above Council: — The weather during the month has been stormy and has retarded the progress of work considerably. Owing to haying lost the service* of both assistants early in the month and my time being taken up in preparing the estimates for metalling and inspecting works in progress, etc., I was unable to make the progress with the work as I anticipated in my last report. Good progress has been made with the patching work on the main road, 53 chain of very bad road having been metalled with sandstone and pumice laid on facines at a cost of £4 13s lljd per chain, which I consider very satisfactory. -I was obliged to suspend the work before completion owing to the weather, as I found more damage was being done to the road by the carting than would warrant continuing the work. More work of this kind could be done at the twelvemile, and other parts, but as these places were not included in the portions of roads for which we had authority, I thought it advisable not to undertake the work for fear the cost may be thrown on the county. Since last County meeting work has been commenced on the Waitewhena, Mangakara, Hutatahi and Mahorahora roads, and my proposals to purchase material for Kakahi bridge and to deliver same to bridge site have been approved, also for delivering Mill | stream and Opetea bridge materials. Tenders were called for this work but no tenders were received and I fear we will be unable to carry out this work. Plans and specifications for contracts on the Tokorimu and Mairoahuiao-Ma-tiere roads have been forwarded to the engineer for approval and the engineering survey of the Turoto road is now well in hand. Work was commenced on the survey of Mangaroa township, but I found it necessary to abandon it until more definite proposals were obtained as to which roads and in what manner the money was to be spent. Estimates for the following roads are submitted:—Main road to Tatu from Renison's, 3 mileg 68 chains, £4023 10s 6d; Harvey road, % miles 40 chains, £2581; ' r Tokpuma |pa'd, 2 miles 40 chains, £2847; Rp.to road, 1 mile 68 chains, £2251 0s 6(3 j Ohura-Mokau, 2 miles 40 chains, £2092; Rimu road, 1 mile 17 chains, £965 7s; Waikaka road, 3 miles 57 chains, £3274 2s 6d; Kopua (Niho Niho I.F. road), 4 miles, £3901 10s; Tongapo-rutu-Mangakara road, 1 mile 40 chains, £1450 4s; Mangakara road 3 miles 50 chains, £4113 18s; Huhatahi Flat to Renison's, 3 mies, £3342 6s.
