MANGAPEHI.

Last Thursday being a general holiday locally the majority of the residents migrated for the day to the Ngaruawahia regatta. Not so* our tennis enthusiasts. We sent a team of six players (three ladies and three gentlemen) up to Taumarunui on Wednesday evening. This team undertook a fairly heavy task, that of playing two clubs in the same day. The results justified the labour, however, for the visiting team was victorious in each case, defeating Rangaroa in the morning by three games out of five, and Taumarunui in the afternoon by four games out of five. The gent's singles in each case proved a very hard-fought set, Ilavson (Mangapehi) defeating Edlington (Rangaroa; by only 4, and McCracken (Mangapehi) scoring a win from Cowper (Taumarunui) by but 9 points. The gent's doubles at Taumarunui also proved a very keen contest. The Taumarunui pair led right up to 49, and then the Mangapehi players forged ahead and won by 10 points. A very pleasing feature of the day was the lavish way in which the visitors were entertained by both Clubs. At Rangaroa they were given morning tea on the court and a splendid luncheon at Mrs Laird's house. At Taumarunui afternoon tea was provided on the court and then the players were taken to dine at the Railway Hotel. The visitors finished up the evening at a dance held in the Manunui Hall, returning to Mangapehi on Friday morning. We would now like the Te Kuiti team to pay us a visit and play us on our own court wnich we can assure the Te Kuiti players is a good one. Appended is an account of the matches, the names of the Mangapehi players being mentioned first in every case:— Rangaroa. —Gent's Singles—B. W. Hayson v. E. Edlington, 50 —46. Ladies' Singles—Miss W. On Saturday last a race meeting was held here, which provided a very enjoyable day's sport. An able committee with Mr A. Sckellern as secretary, carried out all arrangements satisfactorily. About £5 10s was taken at the gate, and the whole affair proved a financial success. Mr Fred. Lovelock, from Auckland, and Toi Searancke, from Te Kuiti, took out bookmaker's permits, and did a good trade. An interesting feature was that a boy, Wetere Hetet, ?ode the winner of five rages in succession.
