MARAKOPA.

Own Correspondent. Fine weather was experienced for the Marakopa sports on St. Patrick's Day, although a few showers in the morning kept a few outside people from attending. The s.s. Rothesay was expected from Kawhia with a fair number of passengers, but the bar was too rough to permit her entrance. Counter attractions at Ngaruawahia and "King" Mahuta's visit to Kawhia interfered with the attendance of the Natives, but on the qther hand there were more strangers from outside districts than have been seen in Marakopa for some time. The various events on the lengthy programme were well contested, a very good day's sport resulting. The results were as follows: —■ Old Men's Race.—E- C. Stanley 1. Won easily. Settlers' Race. —Bell 1, Koroheke 2, S. Rose 3. Ten started, A good race. Marakopa Cup, 100, 220 and 440 yards. Collins 1, R. Willison 2. Collins won the two first distances easily to most people's surprise. Tilting-in-the-Ring.—J. Kinnane 1. Horse Obstacle Race. —R. Willison. Half-mile Race.—Voyce 1, Collins, 2. Four starters. Chop, 16-inch block. —Tere Waanui 20secs. 1, Andreson scr. 2, Smith 3. Horse-swimming.—J|fesbit 1. The two horses first passed the post, were disqualified for coming ashore too soon. ' Swimming" (men). —McGrath 1, Bell 2, o. Boys' Chop.—agfr r ath 1. P'oi 2. Six Pair-oar Boat Race. —Bell Bros. 1, Armitage Bros. 2. Ladies' Pair-oar Race. —Miss Willison and Miss King were too good for their opponents, Mrs Willison and Mrs Turnbull. In the single sculls there were three starters and a splendid race took place between Armitage scr. and T. Vicary lOsecs., the winner only getting home in front of his young rival, who, if he sticks to the game, is likely to be heard of in the future. The 120 yards hurdles resulted in a dead-heat, Walker and Wright dividing the money. A tug-of-War between Maori and Pakeha resulted in a win for the Natives, they having too much weight for their opponents. A dance Was held in the Hall in the evening and was well attended. The proceeds are to be devoted to wiping off the debt on the Hall.
