TE KUITI-AWAKINO ROAD

Metalling Progressing

The work of metalling the To KuitiAwakino road from the 5-mile peg onwards is progressing very favorably. During the past week a staff of about twenty men have been busy forming the roadbed, cutting off those little inequalities in the surface which add so much fco general discomfort when riding, and making the curves in the road more gradual. At the time of writing about eight chains of metal has been placed on the road, and work is proceeding as fast as the drays can bring the metal up. Unfortunately, this is just one of the difficulties. There are not sufficient drays available to keep the metal crusher working at its utmost, and the result is, progress is not being made as fast as it would under different cir cumstances.

A first-class job is being made of the road as far as it has gone, and granted a continuance of fine weather a good surface between all the worst points will be made.

The position of the crusher at nearly three miles from the quarry causes much unnecessary work. If it were moved to the face of the quarry and all metal crushed there, one loading into the drays would be sufficient to carry it to the road where it is required.
