WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held at Te Kuiti on Monday last. There wore present Crs. > Were, Johnston, Gregg, Boddie; Smyth and O'Dwyer. In the absence . of the chairman, Cr Were presided at > the opening of the meeting, Mi* Scholes having intimated that he would not arrive until a hour after the time fixed for the meeting. ; —Special Meeting—

A special meeting for the purpose of fixing the weekly halt-holiday to be observed throughout the County for the ensuing year was held, and it wa3 decided to appoint Thursday afternoon as the half-holiday. —Dog Collar Tenders— Tenders for the supply of dog collars were received from W. McNaught (8d) and J. Erikson (9d). Mr McNaught's tender was accepted. —Dog Tax Collector —■ One tender of 50 per cent'was received for the collection of the dog tax for the ensuing year. It was considered the tender was too high, and the matter was referred to a committee consisting of the chairman, Cra Boddie and Johnston. —Te Kuiti Hospital Road— A letter was received from Nurse Ilattaway, requesting that some work should be done on the road. The matter was left in the hands of Cr Boddie to deal with, as was the matter of repairing the main road by the river. —Railway Matters — Cr Gregg drew attention to the desirability of inducing the Railway Department to attach a passenger car < to the-morning goods train from Frankton. It decided to write requesting the Department to attach a car. —Waitomo Thirds — Cr John-.ton said there was a considerable amount in thirds available for expenditure in his riding. He had got the Enigncer out and had estimates made of various works. Cr Johnston was authorised to carry out the works in question. —Noxious Weeds— A notification was received from the Inpsector of Noxious Weeds, requesting the Council to clear the weeds oil the Esplanade, Te Kuiti. The Engineer was instructed to have the work carried out. --Road Roller— A letter was read from Messrs Stonex and White, Auckland, giving quotations for a road roller. Tho chairman said he had, when in Auckland, gone to see some rollers in use by Mr J. J. Craig. He thought the Council could borrow one of Mr Craig's rollers and thus ascertain what sort of roller would be suitable for their requirements. The matter was held over until the roller is required. —Willows in Rivers — The chairman reported with reference to the vote of ,£l5O on the Estimates for clearing the willows in M-anganu and Mangaokewa streams that he had written to Mr Jennings with a view to having the amount placed at the Council's disposal for expenditure. A reply had been received from the Department stating the money was in the bands of the Crown Lands Commissioner, and that there was no reason why the Council should not be entrusted with its expenditure. He had seen the Commissioner and had arranged to supervise the work, which had to be inspected and certified iiy Mr Galhraith. On tho motion of Cr Boddie, seconded by Cr Were, the chairman's action was confirmed, and the matter was left in the chairman's hnnds to supervise as arranged with the Commisisoner of Crown Lands.

—Road Approach— An application from G. D. Laurie to take earth from a road to fill in an approach was granted, subject to the Engineer's approval. —A Question of Accounts — It was stated by the chairman that in going through the Council's accounts, it was found that no money had been paid to the Council's account for sanitary pans in connection with Te Kuiti sanitary service. The contractor said that what money he had received had been handed over to the late chairman. There was no record of the money being received, and the contractor had no receipts. The matter was left to Cr Boddie and the clerk to deal with.
