DISTRICT ROAD WORKS.
The agitation in connection with the starting of the road works in the distrcit which has been carried on by Te Kuiti residents for the past month has at last had the effect of drawing something definite from the Minister of Public Works.' A telegram was received during the week from the Mini ister stating that instructions had been forwarded to the officers of the Department to arrange with the County Council to liave the metalling of the Te Kuiti-Awakino road proceeded with. This will be welcome news to the settlers generally, though owing to the delay already experienced the season's work will be considerably curtailed. With a substantial vote on the Estimates, it was fondly ho[iej that three miles of metalling would be accomplished before next winter, but with half the working season gone matters will require.to be pushed ahead vigorously in order to get even two milp.s of metal down. Of course there is a possibility of April turning out a fine month, in which case the prospects of substantial work will be greatly enhanced. Last year the weather broke up very suddenly, and was responsible for the cessation of the metalling sooner than was, anticipated. So much depends upon a dry autumn that it is impossible to guage the amount of work likely to be accomplished. Up to the end of March can be counted upon for a working period. Beyond that month it is a gamble with the weather. In any case the work will require to be let in fairly large contracts, and the County Council may be depended upon to lose no opportunity of pushing matters on as vigorously as possible.
