FIRE AT KIHIKIHI.
At about 7,20 on Thursday night, a fire occurred at Mr H Peake's private residence, fortunately unattended by any serious results. From particulars avialable, it appears that the chimney suddenly caught fire, the blaze being noticeable around Kihikihi. Three young men named "Dina" Thomson, Arthur Verner, and Robert Henderson, who happened to be in the vicinity, hurried to the scene, and Thomson and Henderson immediately ascended to the roof and with buckets of water and wet bags managed to extinguish the fire. While doing so the top and a portion of the chimney fell away, and it was only by the exercise of strength by them both placing their hands against the much-heated masonry, that it was prevented from falling on them,. and Thomson's hands were partly burned. The woodwork at the side of the house was also charred. No doubt- the volunteers, with the valuable assistance of the owner, helped to save the building, which, with contents, was insured in the South British Insurance Company.
