KAWHIA DISTRICT.
Own Correspondent Our district is in a very flourishing state just now: what with the very extensive additions to the wharf and store accommodation which are now nearing completion, and also the erection of small wharves and store sheds at the various landings round the harbour.
Messrs R. H. Abbott and Co's. large store is also nearing completion, and Mr G. Jonathan expects to shift into the premises shortly with a large stock of general merchandise. Mr Edgar, chemist, late of Auckland, fcas also' started business at Kawhia with a large consignment of necessaries in the drug and toilet line. Mr iirnine, baker, late cf Te Awamutu. has lately arrived end taken over the bakery business lately carried on by Messrs McDonald and Owen. Some splendid hauis of fish have been secured by our local fishermen of late, principally flounders. This should become a very important industry at Kawhia, when better means of exporting are availablbe. Kawbia is r.ot behind in sport and pleasure programmes. A strong cricket club has been farmed end tennis is also in full swing. Both clubs have a very large membership, and this season is being looked forward to as an assured success. A very interesting match was played between two teams representing G. Jonathan and his employees and a Kawhia team, on Wednesday, the result being a win for Mr Jonathan in games, but in the aggregate for points a win for Kawhia by 29. Great interest was taken in the match.
A monster bazaar will be opened next Friday by the ladies of the Congregational Church. The Kawhia ladies have been working very hard for a long time past to make the bazaar a success, so with our carnival week at Christmas we are well catered for. Mr Bowater. late Opposition candidate has been much in our district of late, and is greatly impressed with the prospects of Kawhia. Colonel Allen Bell, accompanied by Serfct.-Major Coleman, gave a very interesting address to a large audience last night on Defence. At the conclusion of the address quite a number gave in their names as willing to make a division of the Raglan Mounted Rifles.
