FORMATION OF BOROUGH AT TE KUITI.
A public meeting, for the purpose of considering the advisability or otherwise of forming the township into a Borough, wa3 held in tne Town Hall on Wednesday evening la«t. A large numberof ratepayers and others attended the meeting, and Mr Boddic was voted to the chair.
In his opening remarks the chairman stated the reason for which the meeting had been called and outlined the steps that had already been taken in connection with the matter. Mr Roddie stated that he considered the rate of the increase of population in Te Kuiti had been phenomenal, and that the people should do all in their power to see that the progress continued. He considered the meeting a most important one. The County Council at their last meeting became aware of the fact tha as far as the township was concerned, it was under no jurisdiction, and that no rate could be struck or levied. The Chamber of Commerce in view of that fact came to the conclusion that a Borough would be far better for Te Kuiti than to be governed by a Town Council. So the Chamber of Commerce had called this meeting to see what the people intended to do in the matter. Mr Boddie also stated that the formation of a Borough at Te Kuiti would not cause infliction upon any ratepayers, and said he would be only too glad to answer any question relative to the matter in hand.
Several questions were asked and satisfactorily replied to. Mr F. Sims stated that he considered the formation of a Borough at Te Kuiti advisable and had pleasure in moving the following resolution: - "That the necessary steps be taken to form a Borough, to be known as the 'Borough of Te Kuiti', to comprise within its area the whole of the pres:nt township, together with such other adjoining lands as may be found necessary to form fair and just boundaries " —Seconded by Dr Zobel and carried unanimously.
Proposed by Mr Broadfoot, seconded by Mr Blackman: —"That a committee of five persons be now appointed to be known as the 'Borough Committee', for the purpose of carrying out the former resolution, with full power to define boundaries, to appoint a solicitor, prepare the necessary plans, and generally to carry out all details connected therewith." —Carried unanimously. The following committee were elected: —Messrs Boddie, Sims, Darrow, Jones and Steel.
After the general meeting the '•ommittee held a short meeting. Mr Boddie was appointed chairman, and it was decided that matters would be pushed along witht he utmost celerity. The committee will meet again on Tuesday, September 7th. '
