THE PRISON FARM SCHEME.

Speaking on the subject of prison reform the Minister of Justice, the Hon. Dr Findiay. said that all possible steps are being taker, to carry into operation the scheme already outlined by him. The difficulty v.-as that so far the right man ha:; not beer, obtainable for the post of manager of the prison farm. The cua'.ities required in a person appointed to such a position were numerous and varied, and not easy to discover in one individual, but the Minister has hones that he will be able to get the right man shortly. Meanwhile arrangements are being made for the carrying out of the necessary preliminaries The Rev. J, Kayli and Dr Ha;: have already visited the gaois, v-::':: the object of reporting to the Minister on the subject of the c'assincatitn both of prisons and prisoners. and will later, with their report, recommend as the result of their observations which prisoners shah, be sent to the prison farm. As the first subject cf the scheme of reform, the Minister expressed himself as very well pleased -virh the work at present b: : ng done by the Rev. J. Kayll. and i? hopeful from, present indications of the success of the scheme. The farm consists cf about 100 acres of Crown land at Topanui, near Kihihihi, aejaccnt to the North Island Main Truth: railway. It is covered with scruo. an:: the land is capable cf being improved by cultivation. The sing e huts, vnich are now being construe:::: f:r use at the tree planting camps, wil: be sent for the accommodation cf the first batch of men to be sen; there shortly to make the necessary clearings, and prepare the way for the main body.
