At t'ne instance of tne Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce the census v.'as taker, in a given area of the township. on Tuesday las:. The object of ta.-r.r.g '.he census was to find out whether the ronuistion v.-as sufficiently large to form a Boroush. It was dec-idea that the area should only include properties •.vhich would receive direct gain from the expenditure of monies raiseo by way of loans. etc.. for the improvement of the to'.vnship. and to this end an area comprising about two and a half square miles was mapped out, ami the population within that area obtained. The result of the taking of the census has proved, front the point of numbers. most satisfactory, and there should not bo the slightest difficulty in farming a Borough.. The figures obtained are as follows: Total population v.-ithin the given area: bw. Houses occupied on the eastern sicle of the railway line: 9r. Houses occupied on the western sice of the railway line: 5m Male adults 397 Female adults 276 Children under 12 years of age —Males 151 Children under 12 years of age —Females 157 Total 981 As the legal limit of the extent of land which can be included in the formation o? a Borough is 9 square miles, and as the present census has only been taken over about two and a half square the area included is more thai: about three quarters of a mile fr'nt the Te Kuiti Post Office — i\ will be seen that, should the boundaries be slieittiy enlarged, no difficulty will be formed in obtaining the neccessary population, namely for the formation of a Borough in Te Kuiti.
