FIRE BRIGADE SOCIAL.

--- ♦ A very successful social was held under the auspices of the Te Kuiti Fire Brigade, in the Town Hall on Thursday levening last. The attendance was good, there being rather more than fifty couples present, but considering the worthiness of the object for which the social was held, namely to assist in raising the necessary funds to establish and equip a fire brigade in Te Kuiti, it was to be expected that the attendance would have been larger Dancing commenced shortly after eight o'clock, and was kept up until the early hours of the morning. The many pretty costumes worn by the ladies presented a bright and pleasing appearance, and rendered any further attempt to decorate the hail quite unnecessary. One noticed a unique feature in the drafting of the programme, on the list such items as the following catches one's eye: Maniapoto Mazurka, Mangapehi Schottische and Poipio Lancers. After all, what's in a name? The dances were interspersed with vocal and instrumental items, and each was most favourably received. Miss Buckworth and Miss Brady.and Messrs Allan. H. E. Kerr, and W. S. Turner gave vocal items and Mr Cross played a violin solo.

From a dancer' 3 point of view possibly, the chief features which tend to make a success or failure of an evening's dancing are: firstly, the muse; secondly, the floor; and last, but not least, the supper. On tbi-t occasion the music supplied by Messrs Hetet, piano, C. Turner, cornet, and Saunders, violin, was excellent, and on all sides one heard words of praise on their behalf. The fioor was said to be in first class condition, and the supper all that could be desired. EUxras were played during the evening by Miss Buckwortb, Messrs Nicholson, W. Turner, and D. Hctct, and Messrs Cbilcott and Williams, who acted as M's.C, worked indefatigably. Great credit is due to the Managing Committee, which consisted of Messrs Ford, Cbilcott, Waters, Pitcon, Allan, j Nicholson, Hattaway and the hon. secretary, Mr F. Williams, upon whom the brunt of the preliminary works fell, for the very excellent manner in which all the arrangements were made and carried out. Our wish is that the funds of tho Brigade may be largely augmented by the proceeds of the socail.
