Every attention ar.ti civility will be extender to customers. In conversation with a press representative, the Minister for Justice, Hon. Dr Findlay, sain that he could give no intimation at the present time as to who were to be appointed to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement under the age limit of tain Wray, Mr Kenny, and Colonel Roberts, S.M.'s. The appointments would in all probability be made next week. Promotions to be made consequent on the retirement of three gaolers, a number of warders and others, would also be considered by the Cabinet next week, added IDr Findlay. Those who were to be retired would leave the service on the 31st inst., and the new appointments would accordingly require to be made very noon.
The recommendation of the Coroner's jury that some attempt should be made to locate the wrecked Penguin is not viewed with favour by the Marine Department, the possibility of finding the wreck being considered very remote. No one appears to have any idea where the wreck lies, and therefore so large a field would have to be dragged with grapnels that a months' work might prove futile. The cost of a vessel like the Tutanekai, when in commission, amounts to something like £3O per day, and the Department does not consider the search should be undertaken unless more definite ini structions concerning the vicinity of the vessel are forthcoming.
The regular Te Kuiti sale of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company takes place on Wednesday. Excellent all round entries have been received, including a special line of well bred horses from Hawera, for which keen competition should result. In addition, will be offered 60 cases of iruit iu 301b lots.
Mr John Hutcheson, who at one time represented Wellington City in Parliament, has been interviewed by some citizens desirous that he should contest the Mayoralty next month. He declined the honour, stating that the demands of his business would not permit of his giving the necessary time to the duties of the office. Dr Newman and Messrs F. M. B. Fisher and T. Wilford, M's.P., are the only gentlemen who have definitely anonunced their intention ot contest the position.
A cable from London on Friday last reported that Thursday's wool sales were the keenest of the sale series, all sorts hardening. Merinos sold 5 per cent, above opening rates. The sales close on May 25. The series will be limited to 150,000 bales. Nanikau clip sold at 9Jd. The match for the world's wrestling championship, between Gotch and Hackenschmidt, which was arranged to take place in Melbourne during Cup week has been poitponed,. When the pair last met in America Hackenschmidt gave up the combat, and subsequently charged the American with having made use of brutal methods, including eye-gouging. Gotch denied the allegations and journeyed to England with a view to securing another match with the "Russian Lion." The export of sheep to Canterbury from Gisborne has been very brisk cf late, 17,300 having been exported this year. The export of frozen mutton is going to be a record. The Gisborne Sheepfarmers' Company's output is 9000 ahead of their export during the same period last year, and but for the present conditions it is estimated that 100,000 sheep ar.d lambs would have left the local farmers' hands this season. It is considered in- Wellingon that the selection of a successor toMrC. W. Hursthouse, Cheif Engineer of Roads, lies between Mesesrs Wilson and Wither, District Engnieers at Auckland and Christchurch respectively.
