PROPOSED FIRE BRIGADE.
A most important subject was introduced at the last meeting of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce, in the shape of a suggestion that a Fire Brigade should be formed at Te Kuiti. That such an important matte; should emanate from the Chamber of Commerce was quite in order, but the members rightly considered that in elaborating a scheme, which so intimately concerns every individual member of the community the project should be placed in the hands of the general public. In pursuance of such decision a public meeting has been called for Friday evening next, when it is to be hoped the public will muster in force, and lend their whole-hearted support to the movement. The arguments in favour of organising to combat fire outbreaks are legion, either from the standpoint of business or humanitarianism. At Te Kuiti the residents are fortunately situated in having a stream running through the town, and it is merely a matter of making the best use of the gift, which bountiful Nature has so kindly provided, in order to minimise the risk of fire in the town. The one thing needful is the application of sufficient public spirit on the part of the residents. Judging from the interest taken last week in such an important matter as the Railway League, there appears to be little hope. However, human action is subject to strange vagaries, besides which, combining for mutual protection against a destructive element, is such an eminently sensible and natural proceeding that there can be no possibility of differing on the question.
