TE AWAMUTU.
(Own Correspondent.)
The local Christmas trade seemed to be satisfactory all round with the business people this year.
There were large number of people visited here out of the prohibited district i, and great credit is due to the publicans for the way they conducted their business. There was not one arrest for drunkeness during the whole of the holidays. Although the weather was somewhat overcast, and a fair amount of rain fell, it did not seem to spoil the holidays.
There are some very heavy crops in the district this year; in many cases they can only cut three sides of the field and are unable to cut the fourth side satisfactorily owing to the heavy crop.
. The usual monthly sale was held in Mr Jackson's yards last Saturday, there being a good muster of cattle, etc. I am informed by Mr Jackson that there will b; a fortnightly sale held in his yards, commencing on February 20th, 1909, Messrs Dalgety and Co., having decided to sell here.
There was a poll of the ratepayers taken in the Te Awamutu Town Hall last Thursday, for the proposal to borrow £BOO for the erection of a new saleyards, to be built on the new site. The result was 62 for, and 9 against. Rather a nasty accident happened to Mr W. Davis, painter, during the holidays. He was giving a day to carting in hay and got into a waggon driven) by Mr Reynolds, but before being seated, the horses moved, and Mr Davis fell out of the waggon and broke his wrist. It will be some time before he can go back to his trade.
Mr Davis Dwen's boy, 6 years old, met with what might have been a somewhat serious accident on Saturday. When passing the gateway between Messrs Jackson and Thomas', a trap came out and knocked him over. Only for the driver, Mr Garland, who had his hcrse well in hand, it would have been a nasty accident. He pulled up just in time to prevent the wheel from passing over the boy However, the lad got up with nothing more than a fright.
