FIRES AT HAMILTON.
A fire broke out in a billiard saloon situated at the back of Coyle and Jolly's property, Victoria Street, Hamilton, early on Friday morning. Mr Julian, the lessee of the premises, and his wife were absent from home. The billiard room, which contained three tables, was on the first floor and the dwelling' rooms below. • In these the fire broke out. Messrs N. and H. Howel were in charge o ! the premises, and were in bed at the time. They were awakened by the smoke. One of them rang the firebell. The brigade was speedily on the spot, and prevented the outer walls catching. The tables are not very seriously damaged. The insurances are unknown. - A slight outbreak also occurred at Messrs Ellis and Bunrands' woodwork factory, near railway station. The outbreak occurred over the enginehouse and it is surmised that a spark from the engine had lodged in the sawdust. Fortunately, ample provision for coping with the fire was provided on the premises, and with a lead of hose and the patent fire extinguishers, the outbreak was quickly controlled.
