SAWMILLING INDUSTRY.

-- ♦ Conference of Millers.

A conference of sawmilling representatives from which the Press was excluded was held at Palmerston North on Thursday last, delegates being present from Auckland, West Coast (Sooth Island) Rangitikei, Wairarapa, Taranafci. and Hawke's Bay.

On being interviewed at the conclusion of the meeting, prominent sawmillers said they weak) close their mills down indefinitely as the result of the meeting, which was the most representative gathering of sawmillets ever held here, and probably ever held in New Zealand. There were fully 100 mills represented, averaging 30 men each. The conference was held to consider the sdvisableness of re-opening some of the closed mills, bat. as the result of the discussion, it was considered that folly 50 mills would close Indefinitely, affecting at a modest estimate quite 1000 men. while the output of other mills will be restricted. The mam factors of the decision were the wholesale importation of Oregon pine and the general stringency of the money market. It was suggested that the Government should fix a "dimension tariff as one solution of the difficulty, and also impose an export doty on white pine and kauri.
