CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES.

Improved Prices

The second wool sale of this season's series was opened at Christchurch on Thursday, when 19,248 bales were catalogued as compared with 17,500 bales at the corresponding sale last year. A large attendance of buyers was present, representing all sections of the tr-ide. There was a good selection of wool offered, comprised of clips from the plains and the Peninsula and front hill stations. For clean bright halfbred, three-quarterbred, and cross bred wool, suitable for American requirements, there was keen competition, and other buyers were generally outbid on such lots. Clean pieces also met with good competition, but coarse wools, unless very bright, were somewhat difficult to dispose of and comprised the bulk of the wool passed in, though the proportion that failed to change hands was not large. The sale for good wools showed, if anything, an improvement on the November sale, but it is the American competition that is keeping values above London prices. The range of prices was as follows: —Greasy merino, 7£d to 10£ d. Super, halfbred, lOd to llgd; medium, 8d to 9|dd; inferior, 6d to 7f d. Corriedale, B£d to 12Jd. Super, three-quarter-bred, 9d to lid; me Hum, 7dtoßd; inferior, 6d to 6fd. Super, crossbred, 8d to 10hd ; medium, 6Jd to 7|d; inferior, 5d to 6d. Longwool, 5d toß|d; downwool, 6Jd to 9|d; merino pieces, 6Jd to 7£d. Best halfbred bellies and pieces, 6d to B|d; second pieces, 4d to s|d; crossbred bellies and pieces, 4fd to 6Jd; and super, up to BJd. Locks and cruchings, 2Jd to 5Jd.
