WAIRERE CARNIVAL.
The second annual carnival at Wairere is to be held on New Years Day, and already keen interest is beingmanifested in the event by both Europeans and Maoris. The Carnival which was instituted last year promises _to become a thoroughly representative gathering. The locality lis essentially suitable for such a function, the_ fine stretch of water above the Wairere Falls making an idea! course for canoe races and other aquatic events, while the surrounding country offers many attractions for picnic parties. The programme 'of events provides for nearly every branch of field sports, wood chopping, and running, being interspersed with canoe, and swimming races, while competitions for the ladies have not been 'forgotten. Given fine weather there should be a record gathering on the banks of the Mokau on New Years Day.
