EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS.

Severe earthquake shocks have been felt in the Bay of Plenty district during the past few days, commencing on Saturday last. On Tuesday morning a violent disturbance, lasting for about half a minute, followed by smaller tremors was experienced. It is stared that the shock was heavier than those felt during the Tarawera eruption, though not of such long duration. It was also noticed that Whale Island, in the Bay of Plenty, some five miles north-west of Whakatane River entrance, was enveloped in a cloud of what appeared to be dust, which gradually faded away. Fisherman who were cut at sea at the time consider that there was either an eruption on Whale Island or a tremendous land slip on the seaward side, causing the dust to ascend. A very severe shock was also reported from Te Puke en Tuesday morning.
