THEY SAY
—That the new Hall will be well patronised on the opening day—and night. —That the Maoris will have plenty of scope to perform hakas to perfection. That some Pakeha townsmen are preparing to challenge the Maoris to haka. —That the first rehearsal took place in the old hall last Saturday evening, during a comedy play. —That something Scotch fortified the impromptu performance. —That the "skirl of the pipes" was not responsible for the effort, as the last "skirl" is now almost a memory only. —That a desperate townsman is anxious to give a bonus for every dog's head brought to his office. —That the number of heads likely to be brought to him would make him a poor man. —That the howling dogs caused him to lose his peaceful slumbers. —That in desperation he charged the foe in his night attire while the gentle breezes blew. —That a hew horror is threatened in the shape of an invasion by the cat tribe. —That a few bricks, old boots, etc., will be placed handy to the "virtuous couch" to cope with the present and threatened nuisance.
—That if the stone crusher is not shorlty reoprted in Te Kuitt the peace of the district will be endangered.
—That the road for a mile past Oparure should have danger signals displayed to warn the unfortunates using the "road."
—That the recent wash-out has caused another deviation and as there w r as no "rival routes" question to settle, the track now used is very acceptable, and was promptly erected.
—That more money for road construction was granted, and carefully spent. The wash-outs and siips so frequently reported would not cause the waste of money now spent in maintenance.
—That no road in the district is exempt from above criticism.
