MEETING AT TE KUITI.
At a meeting held at Tc Kuiti on Tuesday evening last two questions—railway deviation and prohibition—were discussed. Mr Jer. Ormsby was in the chair, and briefly outlined both the subjects. The liquor question was taken first, and, as no deputation had been appointed to wait on the Premier in conn<jction with the matter, Mr Phillips* proposed, and Mr Pine seeffndeef, llfat the meeting elect a deputation and lay before the Premier the disadvantages which the people of the King Country, as citizens, had to contend with. The following were appointed as a deputation :—Messrs John Ormsby, Pine, Hunt, Somerviile and McCardle. Messrs Pine, John Ormsby, McCardle and Somerviile all spoke in favour of the people having the full right of citizens, and even if they were not in favour of license themselves, they had no right to vote away the licenses which at present existed in the electorate.
With regard to railway deviation, Mr Jer. Ormsby said that a resolution had been passed at a public meeting. to the effect that the residents of Te Kuiti assist the back settlers in securing a deviation of the Ongarue-Strat-ford railway, with its junction at Te Kuiti. Mr Ormsby went on to explain that there had been a misunderstanding, and contended that if the deviation did not come to Te Kuiti it was not of sufficient interest for the local people to take any active part in. After a good deal of discussion it was finally resolved that the resolution be left as it was passed at a former meeting.
