DISTRICT PASS.
Practically all the available hotel accommodation in Auckland has been booked for the week during the visit of the American fleet.
Inspector Bennett, of the Health Department, paid a visit to Te Kuiti last week and made enquiries as to (he loealmilk supply. It should be noted by milk thai a new and drastic law came into force in March last, by which all milk, intended for sale, is under the supervision of the Health Department from the time it leaves the cow until it arrives at the consumer.
The Premier, in referring to the Main Trunk Railway, during the course of his speech at Taumarunui, said that the Government was Irving to make at least a temporary link between the rail heads so- that by August /th. if the line was not safe enough to carry the general public, it would do lor the Ministry and Members of Parliament to reach Auckland during the visit of the American fleet. Of course, the Opposition Members would be placed in front in case of accident, the rank and file of Government Members would come next, and the Members of the Ministry in an easily detachable car at the tail end.
Dairying is rapidly becoming a staple industry along the Main Trunk Line. Although the present season has been rather a bad one, the indications are that butter-producing is going to grow by leaps and bounds when the railway is through, though sawmilling now bulks large in the district from Mangaweka northwards. The Taihape Dairy Company has had a large increase in its milk supply. which will be augmented as the bush comes down, and the factory there is expected to become the largest in the North Island. An interesting fact in connection with this factory is that home separated cream, detested by experts, is taken in, and so far the butter has turned out first grade. The term of office of the Hon. W. P. Reeves. High Commissioner for New Zealand, has been renewed for three vears.
Mr. Nicholls begs to thank the people of Te Kuiti for their generous support of the appeal to assist a benighted traveller and family. The sum of £5 ss. was collected.
