AWAKINO.
o A farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs J. Gardener (late manager for Messrs King and George), at the Awakino boardinghouse, on Thursday of last week. Mr Thompson was in the chair, and expressed regret at their departure from the district, and trusted they would have all sorts of good luck wherever they went. Mr Gardener returned thanks, and hoped all those settlers he was parting from would have much prosperity in the future. Several songs and recitations were rendered by those present, the _ proceedings terminating by the singing of " Old Lang Syne," and " For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." The building trade has been verybrisk here lately, and, in addition to several alterations to buildings, two new residences are in course of construction, as also is the wharf shed. The boarding house has recently changed, and Mr Cummings, the new proprietor, is now in charge. This gentleman has also taken over the billiard-room. The main street has been formed, and when metalled, will add considerably to the appearance of the place. During the week a mob of 1000 wethers went through here on their way to Mr Iredale's property at Mangarama. Another mob of 4,000 sheep will be despatched during the week.
