SETTLERS' SOCIAL.
Miroahuiao Hall. The Settlers' Social, organised for seeing the old year out and the New Year in, at Miroahuiao Hall, was largely patronised despite the inclement weather. Rain fell steadily all day, and as most of the settlers had to travel some distance, it was feared the attendance would be small. However, the rain proved somewhat of a blessing in disguise to those who were present, as, with a larger number, as one settler expressed it, "we should have been dancing on the broadacres." All were out for enjoyment, and good fellowship reigned supreme. The Hall was beautifully decorated with greenery and all the arrangements for the comfort of guests were well looked after. The work of the Committee was well done and special credit is due to Mr Box for the efficient and tactful manner in which he carried out the duties of Secretary. The other committeemen, Messrs Bevege, Sincock, Johnston, Bailey, McDonald and Northcote, ably assisted. Mr Sincock made a capable M.C. and handled the programme excellently. At intervals during the evening the following rendered items: —Messrs Kehu, Anthony and Barker (songs), and G, Elliott (recitations), while Mr G. Bevege gave a clever exposition of the sailor's hornpipe, which was repeated by special request. Kehu also led the Natives in a Cakewalk, which was well appreciated. At mid-night the M.C. called on the company to rise, and all joined in singing " Auld Lang Syne," the Maoris following with a haka of welcome. The M.C, in a few words, wished all of them a happy and prosperous New Year. Dancing was continued till daylight, when the company dispersed after one of the most enjoyable functions yet held in the district.
